"Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him." Matthew 3:13
Jesus set the example in water baptism and then commanded His followers to practice the same. (See Matthew 28:19.) The word in the Greek is "baptizo" which means "to dip or submerge." Being immersed in water is a form of death, since you cannot live under water. Baptism, then, becomes a way of identifying with the death of Christ.
Obedience in water baptism has the effect of putting to death your "old nature" (Romans 6:6) and giving birth to God’s "divine nature" in you (II Peter 1:4). It can help you to overcome paralyzing addictions or lingering illness. Remember, the same water that destroyed the Egyptians brought deliverance to the children of Israel. (See Exodus 14:28.)
Leave the Egyptians behind. Put faith in your water baptism and partake of the divine nature that God has for you. "For he that is dead is freed from sin." (Romans 6:7)
PRAY: "Father, I am willing to die to the desires of my flesh in order to put on Your new nature. Receive my baptism and give me Your resurrection life. In Jesus’ Name, amen."
