The Light of the World

Goal: Light TO You

Theme: Devotional

Difficulty Rating: (3/10)

Good morning {FIRST_NAME}! It is Day #1 of the 14 Days of Light.

The beautiful part of the Christmas season is how it refreshes our souls. It brings much-needed light to our lives. So the goal of today’s step in the 14 Days of Light is to allow the light of Christmas to start refreshing your soul. Let’s jump into a few scriptures describing Jesus as the Light from Heaven.

It has been said that “darkness is the absence of light.” Throughout Scripture, darkness and light are set apart as opposing forces—with darkness representing the forces of sin and evil, and light representing the love, righteousness, and faithfulness of God, revealed ultimately in Jesus Christ.

In Chapter 1 of his Gospel, Luke sets the stage for that first Christmas morning, describing the coming of John the Baptist, who would announce to the World that God’s light was about to arrive.

  • “He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!” –Luke 2:32

  • Then, the Apostle John reiterates that Jesus is the light of the world:
  • “The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” – John 1:9

  • When declaring his public ministry, Jesus called Himself “the light of the world.”
  • “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
  •
  • As children of God, we are called to carry that light into a dark world:

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” –Matthew 5:14-15

  • You see, as followers of Christ, we are unable to be hidden. No one puts a lamp under a bowl because a lamp is designed to help people see in dark places. We give light to those around us by doing and saying what Jesus did.
  •
  • The Apostle John said it this way:
  • "This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." –1 John 1:5
  •
  • God is light, and since He sent His Holy Spirit to live inside believers, so are we. As his ambassadors on earth, we are called to live an active faith as we shine the light of Jesus wherever we go.
  •
  • During these 14 Days of Light, put your light on its stand. Your circumstances are an opportunity to shine brightly for the Lord, share God's overcoming truth, and lead those we love to the source of light powerful enough to light the world through all its darkness – Jesus, the Light of the World.
  •
  • Let’s Pray. Father, help us trust in and always cling to Your light, despite the arguments and pressure of unbelievers around us. May we be influenced by and submitted to You. You alone have light to penetrate the darkness. May we be a light that draws others to you this Christmas season and beyond. In Jesus name. Amen.

What a powerful way to begin the 14 Days of Light. I love how these passages build light in our hearts and then help us to start sharing light with others.

That is what Christmas is all about.
