The Quiet Inner Voice

“…And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains…and after the wind an earthquake…And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” I Kings 19:11b-12

The Word of the Lord often comes in the form of a quiet inner voice. In this Scripture, Elijah was on the mountain, waiting for the Lord to speak. After the Lord was not heard in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, Elijah finally heard Him in a “still small voice.”

Sometimes you can make too much noise to hear the “still small voice” of the Lord. There is a story of a man hanging over the edge of a cliff, screaming for help. He screamed until he lost his voice. Then he heard the quiet voice of a rescuer saying, “Up here. Take my hand.” He had been there all the time…but could not be heard over all the screaming!

Sometimes in the heat of your circumstances, you may find yourself screaming and hollering instead of getting on your knees before God and LISTENING for that quiet inner voice.

Isaiah 30:21a says, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it…”

Father God wants to speak to His children…loving words, comforting words. Be careful to listen…quietly!

PRAY: “O Lord, You have told me to ‘be still and know that [You] are God,’* a God to be exalted in the earth. I am listening now for Your instructions. In Jesus Name, amen.”
