The Sacrament of Communion

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” I Corinthians 11:26

Jesus said, “This do ye…in remembrance of me.” (Verse 25) For years the Jewish people have celebrated Passover with bread and wine, commemorating their deliverance from Egypt. Now Jesus was establishing a sacrament that celebrated His death on the cross and the wonderful gift of salvation.

The bread signifies His Body. The wine, or grape juice, represents His blood. His body was broken and His blood was shed for the forgiveness of sins and the healing of bodies. (See Isaiah 53:5.) “I am the living bread which cometh down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (John 6:5 1)

Partaking of the communion elements in church is an act of spiritual union with Christ. Communion alone does not save. God desires for the remembrance of what He did on the cross to drive you to your knees and cause you to live a life obedient to His Word and pleasing to Him. The next time you eat of the bread and drink of the cup, renew your vows to serve God faithfully, with expectation of His soon return.
